Direct Drive Rotation Stage – DRT

The Dover Motion DRT-100 and DRT-200 series direct drive rotary stages are ultra-compact, direct-drive rotation stages that establish a new level of price, performance, and size.

The direct drive technology of the Dover DRT series eliminates the gear wear, torque variations, and backlash that a conventional rotation stage encounters. Speed, resolution, and repeatability are also increased by a factor of 10 or more as compared to a gear-driven rotation stage.

Despite its high level of performance, the DRT direct drive rotation stage is very compact with body dimensions of 105 millimeters by 105 millimeters by 65 millimeters. Its 25-millimeter through-bore allows convenient routing of optical beam paths or electrical/pneumatic lines.

The DRT direct drive rotary stage offers a standard resolution of 20 micro-radians (about 4 arc-seconds, or 0.0011 degrees). The repeatability is around 1 count, or 20 micro-radians, due to its servo motor technology. Rapid point-to-point moves are permitted by speeds of up to 10 revolutions-per-second, and accelerations of up to 400-revolutions-per-second2. Settling times are minimized due to the motor design which allows high servo bandwidths to be achieved.

The electronic interface is standard with digital A Quad B encoder outputs, a standard 3-phase brushless motor, and 3 digital Hall commutation sensors. This allows the DRT direct drive rotation stage to be driven by any motion controller/amplifier that can drive standard 3-phase brushless motors.

The ultra-stiff, 4-point contact ball bearing guideway provides a high degree of axial and torsional stiffness, and a once-per-revolution index sensor allows a unique home location to be defined to enable repeatable rotary motion positioning.

Design Features

  • High speed: this direct drive motor achieves speed up to 10 revolutions per second (3600 degrees per second) with high servo bandwidth for fast move and settle times
  • Reliable: no gear wear, torque variation, or backlash
  • High Repeatability: around 1 count (4 arc-seconds)
